Vanity Fair: Yes, Roseanne Is Now the No. 1 Show on TV

Cue the trademark cackle. Roseanne’s ratings have continued to dominate the competition, winning the ABC revival a distinction that the network itself has not enjoyed in 18 years: it’s now host to the TV season’s No. 1 show. Based on ratings including delayed viewing, Roseanne is broadcast’s top-rated series—both in total viewers and in the key 18-49 demo, Deadline reports. For those keeping track, that puts the sitcom’s revival ahead of even such ratings titans as Big Bang Theory and This Is Us.

Another fun fact? The last time an ABC show won the key demo, Deadline reports, was even longer ago: 24 years, to be specific, with Home Improvement. Oh, and one more: thanks to Roseanne, ABC has been the top network on Tuesdays for four weeks in a row—which, per Deadline, is a feat it has not managed in more than a decade.

Roseanne’s ratings success is far from surprising. Its premiere shattered ratings expectations, netting more viewers than the comedy’s original series finale back in 1997. Donald Trump, as many know, even called Roseanne Barr to congratulate her on the ratings win. Evidently, ABC’s bet on a show featuring a Trump-supporting matriarch has paid off. Still, the revival has not come without controversy for ABC—especially as the revived show seems to re-write parts of the original series and takes snide jabs at other programs that air on its home network.

This isn’t the first time in recent memory that ABC has pulled off a ratings surprise. Last fall, The Good Doctor became one of the few shows to ever best The Big Bang Theory for the night in a head-to-head ratings competition. With these back-to-back successes, it’s a safe bet that the Alphabet is feeling pretty good right about now. Still, as the Conners themselves can attest, there’s no room for complacency—especially as Netflix continues to scoop up producers and Kenya Barris reportedly plots his exit.
