Dashus and Irie: I hiked Lake Wai’au several years ago and the pipes were exposed then too. The Ranger told me they were there for scientists to take core samples of the earth beneath the lake. Whether or not the ranger was correct I do not know.
I don’t like that there is an observatory up there. It spoils it and the sacred beauty.
I feel we should be there as visitors only; not as basically a gov’t funded business.

Went for a hike to Lake Wai’au at 13k ft yesterday, on Mauna Kea ,so amazing up there among the cinder cones and intense wind, some say the lake is a portal for spirits to travel to and from the spirit world. A sacred place not to be disturbed. It was much lower than I’ve seen, and had exposed about 4 metal pipes sticking straight up out of the water and cut to a point. Why? The ranger didn’t really know but speculated scientific study, and they had been there for 50yrs so they are considered an artifact so for them to be removed (which i requested) we need to talk to government rulers of the sacred mountain. Looking into this, and pulling these spike portal disrupters the hell out of there. If anyone has more info or interest in this please share.
